According to feminist thought, misogyny exists both as a result of gender roles and as a means of enforcing them. Women in historically patriarchal societies have been encouraged to occupy roles that support men.
Misogyny can look like many things. It can be blatant, like violence against women, or it can be less obvious, like subtly perpetuating inequality between men and women. Misogyny can be an extreme form of sexism. These two terms aren’t always interchangeable, however. “Misogyny is a dislike of, contempt for, or prejudice against women,” explains Roma Williams, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Houston. “Sexism is discrimination or prejudice against people who are of the opposite sex.”
The term was coined in the 17th century and is derived from the Greek misos, meaning “hatred,” and gunē, meaning “woman.” The use of misogyny as a term to refer to acts of contempt toward women was popularized in the 1970s by second-wave feminists.
